The M1 Carbine is a lightweight semi-automatic rifle that was a standard firearm in the US military during World War II and the Korean War. The M1 Carbine was the weapon of choice for support troops, and others not primarily involved in infantry combat. It was designed to meet combat needs less demanding than the M1 Rifle, but more than can be met by the M1911A1 pistol. It was more convenient to use than the M1, and less intrusive to their other duties, while still much more effective than hand guns. Eventually, the weapon was also issued to some regular troops, particularly officers, sergeants, and radio operators, since it was less unwieldy than the M1 Garand rifle, and was still considered suitable for close quarters combat. The Carbine continued to be used in Vietnam, until replaced by the M16.
